Colombia Heads to the Polls to Elect Next President
A field of 10 candidates is competing for the presidency, but surveys suggest that no contender is likely to win enough support to avoid a second-round vote. As a result, attention is increasingly focused on a runoff expected on June 21.
According to polling trends, the decisive round is likely to pit Ivan Cepeda, representing the ruling Pacto Historico alliance, against independent populist candidate Abelardo de la Espriella of the Salvacion Nacional movement.
The conservative camp enters the election divided, with support largely split between de la Espriella and Paloma Valencia, a close ally of former President Alvaro Uribe and member of the Centro Democratico party. Former candidate Sergio Fajardo remains behind the leading contenders in most projections.
Analysts say the fragmentation of right-wing support, combined with deep political polarization, could play a decisive role in determining who advances to the final round and ultimately secures Colombia’s presidency.
